We arrived at Avalon with the room already buzzing with energy. Brazzabelle was slated to open what was to be an epic night at Control Hollywood. Avalon was surprisingly not as packed as previous nights given the talent on display but Brazzabelle had the crowd moving early and with ease as she transitioned between heavy electro and trap music. She was the perfect opener for Martin Solveig. Click through the break for the full review.
Martin Solveig started the night out strong and within minutes of his taking the decks you knew this was going to be a great set. He was careful to make sure not to overwhelm the crowd with his hits one after the other and instead intelligently sprinkled them in with his trademark sound. The crowd at Avalon was already pretty rowdy so when the first couple of bars to “Hello” were heard the crowd just erupted. Control at Avalon has the feel and lighting effects of a full sized EDM event with the comfort of being so close to home, this meant that people were not opposed to getting on shoulders and crowd surfing. Martin continued to feed the energy of the room dropping several trap remixes and most notably playing Bubble Butt and a perfectly done Original Don remix. Later in the night he bust out his hit 2009 hit Boys and Girls which was matched by perfectly synced visuals of a male restroom sign morphing into a female sign. It sounds rather odd, but when coupled with the perfectly rhythmic track, the visuals seemed more than perfect.
Martin was determined to lay waste to the room as he very suddenly, yet with perfect technique, dropped Don’t Speak by No Doubt. Gwen Stefani’s voice echoed over the hushed crowd as he played out the first lines of the chorus completely acapella style. The drop that followed was nothing short of epic and saw the whole building jump and shake. The energy was so good and so positive that at one point Martin sang along to his hit “The Night Out”, encouraging the crowd to participate. Overall, the night was nothing short of spectacular as Martin took the crowd on an audiotistic journey not soon to be forgotten.
