Review: Excision’s Tour at The LA Shrine 2/8/13

If you’re a Los Angeles bass head, then the Shrine Expo Hall was the place to be last Saturday night. Excision brought his headlining tour with 150,000 watts of pk sound along with his massive Executioner stage. The night was filled with dub step and drum n bass with supporting acts Dirtyphonics, Eptic, Ill Gates, and CRNKN. I had to really prepare my ear drums for this awesome night filled with some of my favorite music.

The entrance was smooth sailing and I entered as CRNKN was getting things started up. CRNKN had the dance floor moving but unfortunately there were some technical difficulties and his set was pretty much cut in half. Although it was disappointing, it didn’t stop the crowd from having a good time. Ill Gates jumped on the decks next and had the bass totally pumping. This was my first time catching him and I was definitely digging his set. He had a mixture of dub and drumstep, which had me totally jumping. Next up was Eptic who completely tore it up. He dropped some of the gnarliest dubstep that had me cringing me face (not in a bad way). The set was nonstop bass in your face and had mosh pits breaking out in the center of the crowd. Luckily I was able to escape and take a breather before I jumped back in the crowd for Dirtyphonics.

Normally Dirtyphonics is a four man live show, but since this wasn’t their headlining tour, we had two of the guys named Charlie and Pitchin’ throw down a sick DJ set. I’ve seen these guys before and this set was one of the best. They have nonstop energy dropping drum n bass hits one after the other. They threw down a bunch of tracks from their recent album Irreverence which had the crowd singing along. As they were finishing up their set, I could feel my ears already ringing, but I was totally pumped up for Excision to close out the night.

I’ve seen many photos of Excision’s Executioner stage, but seeing it in person totally blew me away. The combination of stage visuals, lights, and bass was a total sensory overload. Excision literally had the place shaking with the amount of bass coming through those speakers. Mosh pits were in full force and people were on each others shoulders all over the place. I remember he dropped his newest track “Rock You” with Downlink and the crowd went nuts. Unfortunately, the speakers couldn’t handle all that bass and the sound went out once again. Excision apologized to the crowd and finally just ended up throwing in a CD to mix the old school way. Excision ended up playing a little longer than he was supposed to because of the technical difficulties. I’ve got to say that even though there were sound problems the night was a complete blast. The crowd looked like everyone was having a sick night and Excision made sure to say he will be back soon. I suggest if this tour is hitting a city near you that you get your tickets right away.
