Last Friday, I drove from LA to OC to watch the Dub Police take over The Observatory in Santa Ana thanks to SMOG and Future Events. The label was formed in 2004 and has brought us many artist such as Trolley Snatcha, Subscape, J Kenzo, EmalKay, and of course Caspa. On this night, Caspa brought along JKenzo, Subscape, and Trolley Snatcha to bring us an epic show of heavy bass, grime and filth through the speakers of the Observatory. JKenzo was first up on the decks, but unfortunately I only caught the last 15 minutes of his set. Even though I wasn’t able to ID anything, he definitely has a raw UK sound with heavy bass and very slow, relaxing rhythms.
After his set came the insanity of Subscape and Trolley Snatcha, who put together an incredible back-to-back set. The first time I encountered their B2B, was at the House of Blues Dub Police Takeover in 2012 and that was an insane show. I told myself I didn’t think there would ever be anything more filthier and nastier than their set that night, but of course I was wrong. These two know how to bring it hard and they played all my favorite dubstep classics like “Fabrication” by EmalKay, “Fatboy Riddem” by Filth Collins, and Dr. P’s “Badman Sound.” Subscape also played my personal favorite, “Screw Up” which features Notorious BIG on the verse. Overall, these guys definitely know how to bring it and this wasn’t even the end of the night.
Finally, the Dub Police General, Caspa graced us with his presence and man, were we in for a treat. Caspa has been coming to California since 2006 and has always given props to the Cali crowd with shout outs during his sets. I will always remember tonight’s set because Caspa played some of my favorite remixes he has made such as, Buraka Som Sistema’s “Hangover (BaBaBa)” and his remix to Rusko’s “Cockney Thug.” Caspa brought that dark UK dubstep sound to mix in with his own tracks like “Where’s My Money” and he ended up closing his set with his remix to Kaskade’s “I Remember.” Caspa has a style of mixing which never gets dull, and because of this, I could watch him every single time he is in town. This is a night I’ll definitely never forget because all of the DJs gave us 100% of themselves. If you weren’t able to catch the tour, you can get a lot of these songs buy purchasing the Past Present Future, Dub Police album which has over 40 track of nothing but Dub Police music. I promise you wont be disappointed.
